"Troops with PTSD helped by meditation"
Soldiers suffering the symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder after tours in Iraq and Afghanistan could be helped by transcendental meditation.
The Beatles famously championed the practice in the late sixties, which involves closing the eyes and chanting mantras.
Now a study by medical researchers from Georgetown University in Washington DC has found it could be more effective than conventional treatments at treating stress, depression and disturbed sleep.
They studied its effects on five soldiers aged between 25 and 40. The report says it lowered blood pressure and the body’s reaction to stress. The findings are being published in the Military Medicine journal. |
