by Jacqueline Stevens

In December 1959 the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (pictured below being interviewed on the BBC World Service), aged 44, arrived in London to introduce his simple, natural meditation technique to the UK. Within a month he'd taught hundreds of seekers ... and from there it grew. By the late 60s, with a little help fromThe Beatles, Transcendental Meditation had become the must-have spiritual accessory for the hippie generation. Now, 50 yers later, over 6 million people have learnt worldwide, and the technique is enjoying a renaissance die to celebrities like Russell Brand and Moby.

Many other gurus and methods followed the Maharishi's path westwards, and ... TM became the best-researched technique ... Following the success of Hollywood movie director David Lynch in funding over 40,000 young people to learn the technique in America, the official UK organisation has reduced the price considerably to make it accessible to all.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary, events happening throughout December include live EEG demonstrations of individuals meditating ... by US neuroscientist, Dr Fred Travis, in London, Manchester and free talks on TM nationwide. ...
