Take the first step

Making Contact

To find out more about Transcendental Meditation, the first step is to make contact with your local Teacher or Centre, or with our National Enquiry Office. They will be able to answer any initial questions you may have and offer you the opportunity to attend an Introductory Talk.

Introductory Talk

Introductory Talks are sometimes held in the form of a public lecture; however it is often possible to arrange to see a Teacher individually, by appointment.

The talk is free of charge, and involves no commitment to learn. You are welcome to come and hear about Transcendental Meditation and to bring any friends or family who may also be interested. The Teacher will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

The presentation covers points such as: what Transcendental Meditation is; what you can realistically expect to get out of the practice; a little about the scientific research; how the technique works; where it comes from; and how it differs from other systems of meditation and relaxation. You can also discuss personal considerations privately with the Teacher.

Afterwards, you may decide to sign up to learn, or you may decide to give it further thought. If you decide to learn, you will have the opportunity to make an appointment for instruction.

Learning Transcendental Meditation

Learning Transcendental Meditation starts with four sessions on consecutive days, each approximately one-and-a-half hours in duration. The first of these sessions is one-to-one, where you learn the technique and practise it for the first time. On the next three days, thorough explanation as well as practical instruction is provided, based on your practice at home.

Because it is convenient for most people, these first four consecutive days of the course usually start on a Saturday - by personal appointment - followed by sessions on Sunday morning, and then Monday and Tuesday evenings. However, it may be possible to arrange a different schedule if that is more convenient. Feel free to ask your Teacher about this.

The course continues ...

The entire six-month course is included in the fee that you pay to learn Transcendental Meditation. Following the first four consecutive days, you have regular sessions for personal one-to-one verification of the practice with your Teacher, and also group seminars every few weeks. For maximum results, we recommend personal verification once a week for the first month, and monthly for the remaining five months - but understand that this may not always be possible for everyone. This programme ensures that you become thoroughly self-sufficient in the practice, continuing to practise the technique correctly and reap maximum benefit. It also provides deeper insight into Transcendental Meditation, the scientific principles that underpin it, the development of one's fullest potential in higher states of consciousness, and the proven applicability of Transcendental Meditation in education, rehabilitation, health care, and other facets of life.

By the end of the six-month course, you will have all the knowledge and experience you need to meditate on your own from then on. You have learned a technique, not become part of a group or organisation. However, once the course has been completed, there is a thorough and comprehensive support programme available, comprising meetings, weekend courses and advanced techniques, for those who wish to take their personal development further.

You will be in good hands

There are over 40 teaching Centres in Great Britain where you can learn Transcendental Meditation. Courses are taught by qualified Teachers who have spent at least five months on a full-time training programme designed and supervised by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, founder of Transcendental Meditation.

The teaching of Transcendental Meditation is administered by a national educational charity, Maharishi Foundation, which maintains the standard of teaching nationwide.
