For those doing TM

Transcendental Meditation
a natural solution to ease
anxiety and depression

MeditaterBoth anxiety and depression are extremely common; yet a simple solution may be at hand. For some, stressful or discouraging events produce short-lived symptoms; but for others, anxiety and depression can be ongoing and relentless, making normal daily life impossible. Tried and tested, Transcendental Meditation provides a natural solution to help you overcome anxiety and depression.

Transcendental Meditation
breaks the vicious circle

vicious circle

Dealing with anxiety and depression can be a long-term challenge and even a vicious circle, where the less we are able to cope, the more anxious or depressed we become.

Redused Anxiety

Transcendental Meditation is an effortless and natural technique that can help end that self-perpetuating cycle.

Scientific research has shown that the deep relaxation gained from Transcendental Meditation settles mind and body so that the nervous reaction to stress is lessened. Subsequently, the anxiety and depression are reduced, enabling you to manage and overcome many of the symptoms that you may experience, including panic attacks, social anxiety and phobias. An analysis of all published studies on relaxation and anxiety (see chart above) showed that Transcendental Meditation was twice as effective in reducing anxiety as other techniques including the relaxation response, systematic muscular relaxation, and muscle biofeedback.

Redused Depressive Symptoms

Two recent studies looked at more than 100 people aged 55 years and older at risk of cardiovascular disease and found that those who were randomly assigned to practise Transcendental Meditation showed a 48 percent reduction in depressive symptoms compared with those given health education, without the use of drugs or psychotherapy (see chart above).

Doctors recommend Transcendental Meditation

If you feel that anxiety or depression is seriously disrupting your life, you should consult your GP. While doctors, psychiatrists and psychologists do recommend Transcendental Meditation for these conditions (see below), results may vary from individual to individual, according to circumstances. For some, results may come quickly. For others – with more severe or longstanding conditions – sustained regular practice may be required over many months along with professional medical care.

Bernadette Van Den hout

“The profound relaxation, and the ease with which people adopt this technique – which is so simple to learn no matter what background, intellect or age – makes Transcendental Meditation stand out from other relaxation techniques. EEG studies show that one dips in and out of a fourth state of consciousness, characterised by restful alertness and distinct from waking, dreaming and sleep states. This state is entirely natural and can be achieved from the beginning, even though few people ever access it spontaneously during their lives. This accounts for the profound effects of Transcendental Meditation on physiology, mind, and emotions – including anxiety and depression.” Bernadette van den Hout, Psychiatrist, NHS

“In my years as a GP I found TM to be a dignified form of self help for my patients, who often reported benefits such as reduced anxiety, less sense of stress, better sleep, improved wellbeing. It is completely safe and for many people makes a good alternative to time consuming therapies and is likely to reduce the need for medication, and this is consistent with the research findings.” Michael Musgrave, doctor
