Why choose Transcendental Meditation?
There are any number of meditation techniques on the market. And as meditation becomes more popular and its benefits recognised (thanks mostly to the scientific research and educational applications of Transcendental Meditation), it can be confusing to know which one to choose.
They are not all the same. Research shows their effectiveness varies up to nine-fold. "Meditation" has become a generic term for mental techniques ranging from prayer, to philosophical contemplation, cultivating a state of present centredness or mindfulness, physical relaxation, visualisation, breath control, guided imagination, concentrating on one thing to the exclusion of all else, hypnotic trance ... you name it. No wonder the effects vary. But each has its own value, undoubtedly.
Actually it's simple to discriminate. All the above have one thing in common: they keep the mind active in some way - albeit with the aim of controlling or even calming it. They do so either by keeping the mind focused on something - which requires effort, and thus prevents the mind getting the profoundest rest and revitalisation - or by thinking or imagining something, which also keeps the mental faculties active in various ways. In both cases, the mind remains on the active thinking level.
Transcendental Meditation is in a class all its own. It is meditation in its purest, original form. It is simply a matter of allowing the mind to do what it knows how to do, and wants to do - to settle to the simplest state of awareness. A technique for freeing the mind to go where it is just waiting to go. It does not involve concentration or thinking about anything, even for a moment. It's so easy that children as young as five can do it. Transcending is the most natural and universal human ability. Transcendental Meditation elicits transcending effectively, reliably.
Why insist on Maharishi Foundation® Teachers?
Learning to transcend requires absolute innocence; it is the most delicate thing you can ever do. It requires Teachers that are not only properly trained but who have the personal qualities and respect to adhere to the niceties of instruction and the responsibility to provide whatever personal attention the pupil requires on an ongoing basis. This brings the benefits of the profound tradition that has preserved the technique in its purity for centuries. When you learn Transcendental Meditation from a Maharishi Foundation Teacher, you know you are effectively getting it from the greatest Vedic Masters of all time.
Approved Teachers have been certified by Maharishi Vedic Institute®, a professional regulating body that maintains the standards of teaching throughout the UK.
Transcendental Meditation has been taught in the UK since 1959 when Maharishi Mahesh Yogi first visited the country. Maharishi Foundation in the UK is affiliated to a worldwide network of non-profit organisations authorised by Maharishi to train and certify teachers. Maharishi Foundation not only provides courses to learn Transcendental Meditation but also a complete multi-year follow-up programme with a full range of advanced techniques and courses designed by Maharishi for the fullest possible development of consciousness. No other organisation, or individual, in the UK is authorised to teach Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation and its advanced programmes.
But I want a non-commercial, non-religious, secular meditation technique!
If it looks religious, cultish, or commercial, it's an illusion! The fee you pay to learn not only reimburses the Teacher for their time, but helps us to share this precious gift with as many people as possible, young and old, in this country and worldwide. Transcendental Meditation does have a traditional background, but it is one of empiricism and knowledge, not of belief. Transcending is more fundamental than any belief or philosophy, and puts you in touch with your own inner wisdom and truth in an unparalleled way. Transcendental Meditation employs the subtle physical effects of sound on the nervous system - not persistent repetition of a mantra, or a way of thinking - to initiate this entirely natural response. It is the intrinsic properties of sound that are used: any acquired associations are irrelevant. You are encouraged to keep the technique to yourself, not for the sake of secrecy, but for two important reasons. The meditation works better for you if you keep it to yourself; it makes that private time with yourself more powerful. And second, because you want others - for their own maximum benefit - to learn only from a qualified Teacher.
Transcendental Meditation™, founded by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi® is available in the UK only from Maharishi Foundation®, registered educational charity number 270157 (in Northern Ireland charity number X0610/9, an affiliate of Maharishi Foundation). Please note that no other organisation in the UK offers courses in Transcendental Meditation, as taught by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.
